The Charleroi Fire Department proudly protects the citizens and property of Charleroi, Speers, Twilight, and Dunlevy Boroughs. Although we serve a primarily residential area, we have a commercial district as well as several industrial locations within our response area. In addition to these areas we cover part of Interstate 70, the Mon/Fayette Expressway (Toll 43), along with providing River Rescue on the Monongahela River.
Presently the department operates out of one station with an attached annex that houses additional apparatus and equipment. The department operates with 9 pieces of apparatus including 4 Engines, Ladder, Rescue, Squad, Medic, and Boat. The department currently consists of 38 active members, including junior members, which also includes the Fire Chief, two Assistant Chiefs, and five Captains. The Chief of the department is Robert Whiten Jr., who has 33 years of service in the department, 18 of them having been Chief.
The department is currently dispatched by Washington County 911. Members of the department are notified of an alarm via their own minitors.
The Charleroi Fire Department is one out of approximately 300 departments that still use the Gamewell Diaphone System in the United States. The Diaphone Air Horn is activated manually at the station by one of our members prior to the apparatus leaving the station.
The Charleroi Fire Department provides mutual aid to various departments surrounding our response area on first alarm assignments, as well as having area departments assist us. The two departments that we closely work with are Fallowfield Township, Station 47, and Lock 4, Station 22. Although all three departments serve different parts of Charleroi PA, 15022, we now consider the departments together as the Charleroi Fire District. Stockdale, Station 17, is also part of the District. Bentleyville's Rapid Intervention Team runs all structure fire assignments with us.
